Privacy Policy

My Next Lifer (mynextlifer.com) is an independent web application created by Steve Cherrier. It is currently operated as a non-commercial project. Questions about this policy can be sent to help@mynextlifer.com.

Account information
When you create an account, we store your email address and a hashed (encrypted) password. Your email is used only to identify your account and to send account-related messages (such as email confirmation). We do not send marketing emails.

eBird API key
Your personal eBird API key is stored in your account. It is used solely to make bird search requests to eBird on your behalf. It is never shared, sold, or used for any other purpose. You can remove it by deleting your account.

Life list species data
If you choose to upload your eBird life list, we store the scientific names of the species you have observed. We do not store your full eBird checklist history, dates, locations, or any other personal birding data — only the species list itself.

Search preferences
We save your last search location, radius, and date range so the app can restore them on your next visit. This is stored in your account profile.

Shared lists
When you use the Share feature, a snapshot of your current bird list (species names, location, and search parameters) is stored and assigned a unique URL. This data is publicly accessible to anyone with the link. It does not include your name or account information.

Display preferences
Your dark mode preference is saved to your account.

• We do not collect your full eBird observation history
• We do not collect payment information (the app is free)
• We do not use advertising cookies or tracking pixels
• We do not sell or share your data with advertisers
• We do not use your data to train AI models

My Next Lifer uses the following third-party services to operate. Each has its own privacy policy:

Supabase — provides our database and authentication infrastructure. Your account data is stored on Supabase's servers. Supabase Privacy Policy ↗

eBird / Cornell Lab of Ornithology — provides all bird sighting data. When you search for birds, a request is made to eBird's API using your personal API key. eBird API Terms ↗

OpenStreetMap / CARTO — provides map tiles. Your approximate search location is sent to their servers to load map imagery. CARTO Privacy Policy ↗

Wikipedia — provides species photographs via their public REST API. Species names are sent to Wikipedia to retrieve images.

Nominatim / OpenStreetMap — provides location geocoding (converting city names to coordinates). Your typed location name is sent to their servers when you search by location.

Google Fonts — provides the typography used in the app. Your browser makes a request to Google's servers to load fonts. Google Privacy Policy ↗

My Next Lifer uses browser local storage to maintain your login session (via Supabase's authentication system). We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking cookies. No cookie consent banner is required because we do not use non-essential cookies.

Your account data is retained for as long as your account exists. Shared lists are retained indefinitely unless you request deletion. If you delete your account, all associated profile data (email, API key, life list, preferences) is deleted. Shared lists created by your account may be retained for a short period before being removed.

You have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data at any time. To request account deletion or a copy of your data, email help@mynextlifer.com and we will respond within 30 days.

If you are located in the European Economic Area, you have additional rights under GDPR including the right to data portability and the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.

My Next Lifer is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

If we make significant changes to this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy. For material changes, we will notify users via email where possible.
